Abstract
The paper shows the possibilities of shaping urban space in economic and cultural conditions of United Arab Emirates. Hyper dynamic development of cities like Dubai or Abu Dhabi reflects two illustrates two types of aspiration: to be ahead of global trends and at the same time to emphasize the respect for tradition.

During last three decades United Arab Emirates is one of the most dynamically changing countries in the world. It is not only due to its rapid spatial and economic development but also the inflow of the professionals and workers from all over the world. Nowadays nearly 80% percent of inhabitants of Abu Dhabi and Dubai are immigrants. Vast majority of them are temporary habitants, who came to UAE only for several years. One of the consequences of economics prosperity are high aspirations related to architectural and functional form of the city. The city spaces are collections of the icons of modern civilization tallest, biggest, most expensive or most innovative buildings. This multitude of plans and ideas is a challenge for the coordination of spatial development.
An important aspect is also the need of reinterpretation of traditional urban patterns and architectural details. On one hand this type of development incorporates or even shapes global trends, on the other it respects the identity of the native population. In those conditions, two paradoxes can be noticed. The reinterpretation of traditional Arabic forms is being done mostly by professionals with different cultural background. The new-traditional spaces are also used mostly by migrants.
The paper will introduce the planning practices including forms of public consultation - focused on expectations of the native population, but in the same time taking under consideration the needs of multicultural temporary immigrants society.
