Abstract |
In the context of globalization and rapid urbanization, Chinese cites are losing their diversity as well as uniqueness. Therefore, it is of great importance to carry out townscape planning in contemporary Chinese cities to improve urban landscape identity. First, this paper summarizes concepts and approaches of townscape planning in China and the world, then defines the concept of townscape as the integration of natural system, local culture protection system, and visual management system in the local context, at last proposes the approach of townscape planning based on ecological infrastructure (EI), and illuminates the approach how to control the urban development with an ideal urban landscape model. The paper takes Weihai a famous coastal city in Shandong province for example. Through establishing the water management network, biodiversity conservation network, vernacular heritage protection network, recreation network, and visual corridor & building height control network, the townscape planning will lead Weihai to a more identified city featuring the harmonious among its ecological, cultural, recreational, and visual characters. |
