Abstract |
In the formation of cities within development process, certain factors affecting the place of foundation seems to have gained very much importance. The soil’s being productive and adjacent to water, having strong environmental relations are the factors which influence the physical location and scale of the settlement. Furthermore, the concept of religion, agricultural produce, the importance of the industry and trade functions, emergence of the market concept, job distribution, professionalizing in operations etc. have formed the macroform of the city. In definition of the city within this process, population, boundaries of management, economical and social scales have been employed. Thanks to such scales of the city, there is a tendency of intensification and centralization in the urban structure, after which however, the tendency shifted toward decentralization. It is at this point where sprawl formations are encountered. Bursa, ranking 5th among 81 cities of Turkey , with regard to socio-economic development index, is located in Marmara Region, a city which improves with the influence of the Istanbul metropolis. Bursa , located on the Silk Road , became a city of commerce in the Byzantine Era, while it became a management city in the Ottoman Era. Today, with the decentralization of Istanbul , it has become a city of automotive and textiles which makes a great contribution to the country’s economy. Bursa has become a part of Istanbul with its different access routes to Istanbul . Particularly after ferry transport from Istanbul , daily travels either for business or residence between each cities have increased. In this process, Istanbul is like a magnet attracting Bursa . This provides a urban sprawl on the northern axis aksı (Bursa – Yalova) with a road access to the Bursa city center, and on the northwest axis(Bursa –Mudanya) accessed on sea. While the functional areas on this axis get farther from the Bursa city center with regard to accessibility, they get closer to Istanbul . In this study, the linear urban sprawl formations within Bursa which became a focus for transportation with a swift access from Bursa to Istanbul Metropolis will be analyzed. While such formation has a positive influence on the economic relation between the two metropols, its influence on the productive soils of the city will be taken into account. From that point of view, we shall try to establish an urban sprawl model in interaction of a city with another one at a higher level. |
