Abstract |
The African National Congress (ANC) led government in South Africa is seeking to create a more sustainable environment. This is reflected in various policies relating to the environment and land use planning and management. However, it is not clear to what extent the policy has been translated into practice. After briefly introducing the current South African policy framework relating to the environment and land use planning, this paper will then critically compare policy and practice as exemplified in both land use management legislation and applications in terms of those regulations. The outcome of this analysis will lead to recommendations to enhance sustainable development, including lowering carbon emissions, though land use management mechanisms. |
