Abstract |
Traditional urban planning in Kenya has focused mainly on the formulation of policies strategies and guidelines for the development of urban areas. The shortcoming of this approach has been that such plans do not get implemented, do not improve the quality of the physical; environment and benefit to urban residents. Due to this most of our cities are experiencing negative other than positive urbanism. To correct this anomaly, there is need to rethink planning and to link plan formulation to sound capital investments on strategic urban projects. This paper explores how such linkage can be realized; what are the critical areas of focus for investments within urban areas? What are the sources of capital for investments? And how can such investments be successful? The paper will also explore how improved urban governance and citizen participation will improve accountability and introduce transparency in the implementation of urban projects. |
