The paper discusses the causes behind the deteriorating liveability of Wuhan and presents suggestions on how to rebuild and add to liveable features of Chinese cities from a cultural perspective.
Abstract
Wuhan was known as one of the most down-to-earth cities with a worldly
character which is quite livable in the 1980s and 1990s, but now as one of the most complained cities by its residents in recent years with various urban problems. The paper begins with a review of the past Wuhan and it livable characteristics from the cultural and social perspectives. Then by presenting the current state and people¡¯s perception of the city now, the paper puts forward a sharp contrast and discusses the causes behind the deteriorating livability of the city from the cultural perspectives and the way to preserve it cultural heritage from the point of urban planning. The paper concludes with suggestions from the view point of an urban planner and designer on how to rebuild and add to the new aspects of the cultural and thus the livable features of Chinese cities like Wuhan.
