Abstract |
Island settlements, which possess their own morphological structure, usually have a slow, withdrawn, controlled development process and also they are occasionally independent from the mainland. This situation reveals advantages like conservation of the urban fabric & identity and efficient use of natural sources; also some disadvantages like limited conditions of service. However, depending on the city’s general planning principles and demands, island settlements become a popular focal point of tourism. In time, they become a typical “edge” settlement under the pressure of rapid density increase of the city. The opportunity of natural life very close to city center with modest facilities attracts people for seasonal recreational activities. In this context, the need for sustainable urban design principles and practices raise as a necessity for transferring the preserved identity and macroform of the unique island settlements to future generations. Within the theoretical framework of a proposed placemaking strategy, this study aims to investigate island settlements with modest characteristics located close to the high-density city center and determine sustainable urban design strategies for future development, in the case of Burgazada (Istanbul). The research methodology is based on archiving and analysing the historical settlement development process and field studies. As a next step, thirteen concepts of placemaking strategy have been tested in conjunction with the analyzes. Finally, associated with the analysis and evaluations of the framework, visions and urban design strategies for sustainable development are conceptually determined for short, medium and long terms. The study highlights the need and importance of sustainable development for both preserving the historical urban fabric & identity, and providing healthy living conditions for the inhabitants; on the other hand, it offers possible scenarios with micro implementations in the sustainability context. |
