CALL FOR PAPERS
ABSTRACT of I.S.C.Ter Beek, Msc / AGV- Traffic and Transport Consultancy Group - The Netherlands.
Subject: Multifunctional and intensive landuse in the Netherlands; urban development in a more conscious way / Appearances and aspects.
Interesting for participants because: Spatial planning according to the principles of intensive and multifunctional landuse is a result of a change of opinion of the Dutch Government how to deal with the space and all the spatial claims of economical, technical and social developments. Instead of purely economic motives (high groundprices) the mean motive for intensive and multifunctional landuse is to preserve and stimulate environmental/spatial quality
Content: Intensive and multifunctional landuse is one of the spatial planning principles promoted by the Dutch Government to generate environmental/spatial quality. The explicit choice for environmental/spatial quality is due to the growing awareness that the future quality of the Netherlands diminishes rapidly when the current consumption of space will continue. The paperpresentation will show some examples of intensive and multifunctional landuse. And also some aspects, which come with this more or less innovative way of spatial planning, will be discussed. Extra attention will be given to multifunctional and intensive landuse on top of or nearby infrastructural projects.
Personal involvement: From 1998 till 2001 Ter Beek participated in the Program of Intensive Landuse of the “Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial planning and Environmental affairs”. From 2001 till now Ter Beek continued involvement to this subject as senior consultant for projects with an aspect of multifunctional and intensive landuse at the “AGV- Traffic and Transport Consultancy Group “.
Session: The open marketplace seems to be the most appropriate session for this paperpresentation.

Abstract |
Intensive and multifunctional landuse is one of the spatial planning principles promoted by the Dutch Government to generate environmental/spatial quality. Intensive and multifunctional use of space in urban areas manifests itself in basiscally three different ways: 1. by densification (high-rise or infill development), 2.by building underground or bridging of existing infrastructure and 3. by mixing of functions in one building/project or in a timetable. |
