Short Outline
The development of the transport infrastructures in Spain, are changing the social and urban morphology of some cities and consequently, we need to reconsider how we approach cities.
Our case study analyses the development of Madrid’s metropolitan area and the problems arising from the integration of nearby medium-sized cities.
Abstract
> This study analyses the development of Madrid’s metropolitan area and not so much how it influences, due to the development of new technologies and infrastructures, the suburban areas it takes over and, but mainly future relationship with already consolidated areas. These areas have problems of a very different nature stemming for their history and the different management and government styles.
> We study its impact on the historical towns of Toledo and Segovia (heritage of the world), whose growth is currently stagnated.
More precisely, we analyse development of the historical area in Toledo and the future development of approximately 8000 dwelling units, with a population of 50000 people and over two million square meters in Segovia.
> While the new development is going to have a significant quantitative impact on the demography, economy and social fabric, we will focus on its qualitative elements, especially if the opportunities granted by new technologies are properly used.
> In Toledo, new alternatives have been creating for the town development and there is a Management Office that facilitates this question.
>In Segovia the proposal merges very different elements together resulting in very specific features.
On the one hand, global features (ring road, high-speed train, motorway, new shopping centres, etc) must co-exit with very marked local factors (landscape, waterways, etc), but on the other hand, it is an example of sustainable development with its low population density and environmental protection. At the same time It coordinates and consolidates an important urban area that is quite isolated from the main town but does not have a large degree of operational autonomy
