| Abstract |
| In this paper we investigate supposed NIMBY behaviour in strategic urban projects. First, we review the literature on NIMBY theory and its critiques. Next we present an in depth analysis and a detailed description of the causes and the development of an ongoing conflict in a Flemish case between inhabitants and the project partners. We conclude that the NIMBY framework is not equipped to handle the full complexity of the emergence and evolution of local opposition. However, the NIMBY frame shapes the social reality of project partners and acts therefore as a self-fulfilling prophecy, by psychological processes of selective perception and attributional distortion. |
